Jakarta Rail Transit is an independent guide to the urban railway systems of Jakarta. This site is not associated with the transport companies that operate the railways of Jakarta.
About Jakarta Rail Transit
Jakarta is one of the largest cities in the world, and it is famous for its chaotic traffic. Jakarta has also been in the news regarding its demotion as the national capital. A new capital (Nusantara) was built in Kalimantan in Borneo, and government administrative offices are moving to the new city.
Many (mostly Western) news outlets have been publishing stories with headlines that Jakarta is sinking and is being abandoned for the new capital. While Jakarta faces many environmental challenges (such as sinking due to overuse of groundwater), it’s still business as usual in the financial capital of Indonesia.
The sensationalist news sites that say Jakarta is being abandoned neglect to mention that the city is still expanding, and that there are several new urban railways that are planned or under construction.
About the editor
My name is James Clark, and I’m the editor of the Jakarta Rail Transit.
I am the founder of Future Southeast Asia, which covers transport and urban development news in Southeast Asia. Future Southeast Asia includes coverage of the Jakarta railway system expansion. I publish a weekly newsletter that covers urban railway news in Southeast Asia (subscribe here).
I started Jakarta Rail Transit after being frustrated with the lack of unified information about the urban railways. I got the light rail to the high-speed station at Halim, but I discovered that there was no official website for the Jabodebek LRT. I was also confused with the difference between the Jabodebek LRT and Jakarta LRT, so I have made this site to put both LRT systems on one site.
I also write about my travels around Southeast Asia at Nomadic Notes.
